One man. One idea. One gathering in Chicago in 1905. The Rotary Foundation has since invested more than four billion dollars to change the world, and it starts with every club, in every community, everywhere.
On February 23, 1905, a young attorney named Paul Harris gathered three friends in a Chicago office and imagined something new: a club of professionals who would rotate meeting locations, build real friendships, and serve their communities without agenda.
Harris believed that professional people, when connected with purpose and held to a high ethical standard, could change the fabric of their communities. He called this network Rotary, named for the practice of rotating meeting venues among members' businesses.
From four people in one room, Rotary has grown to 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs across 200 countries. Every one of those clubs, including the Rotary Club of Pageland, SC, carries Paul Harris's original conviction: service to others is the highest calling a person can answer.
